Journey into ancient African wisdom. Discover the sacred origins of time, creation and ancestral knowledge in the mountains of Mpumalanga, South Africa.
High in the mist-covered mountains of Mpumalanga lies one of Southern Africa’s most intriguing ancient stone sites — Inzalo Yelanga, internationally known as Adam’s Calendar.
To the indigenous knowledge keepers who preserve its spiritual significance, this is far more than a collection of ancient stones. It is a sacred place of creation, astronomical observation, ancestral wisdom and spiritual awakening.
Known as Inzalo Yelanga — The Birthplace of the Sun, this extraordinary site invites visitors to explore a deeper understanding of Africa’s ancient relationship with the cosmos, nature and the origins of humanity.

Three ways of seeing the stones
An Ancient African Stone Calendar
Inzalo Yelanga is believed by its custodians and some independent researchers to be an ancient astronomical observatory, with stone arrangements associated with the movement of the Sun during the equinoxes and solstices.
These seasonal alignments form an important part of the site’s traditional interpretation as a calendar used to observe time and the changing seasons.
Some researchers have proposed that the site predates Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids, although its precise age and original purpose remain subjects of debate rather than established archaeological conclusions.
For those who preserve its ancestral teachings, Inzalo Yelanga represents the extraordinary astronomical awareness, spiritual understanding and relationship with nature attributed to ancient African civilisations.
The Womb of Creation
Within the sacred teachings shared by African knowledge keepers, Inzalo Yelanga is also associated with Umzali Welanga — The Mother Stone or Womb of Creation.
It is understood as a place where life, consciousness and ancient wisdom are spiritually connected to the Sun.
According to these traditions, the stones are not merely physical structures. They are regarded as vessels of ancestral memory, carrying knowledge across generations.
The site is associated with spiritual cleansing, healing, sacred ceremonies and communion with Umvelinqangi, the Creator.
Visitors are invited to encounter these teachings with openness and respect, recognising the profound relationship between African spirituality, the natural world and ancestral heritage.
The Seventh Direction
One of the most profound teachings associated with Inzalo Yelanga is the concept of Indlela Yelanga — The Spiritual Pathway of the Sun.
Described as the Seventh Direction, this spiritual pathway represents a journey inward, beyond the physical directions of the world, towards a deeper understanding of oneself.
To walk among these ancient stones is, in the words of the knowledge keepers, to return to the core of one’s being and reconnect with the ancient timelines of humanity.
It is a journey of remembrance, reflection and spiritual discovery.
Rediscovering Africa’s ancient knowledge
For generations, indigenous African knowledge systems were marginalised and disrupted through colonisation.
Today, renewed interest in ancestral wisdom is bringing people from across the world to sacred places such as Inzalo Yelanga.
Artists, historians, healers, sangomas, spiritual seekers, researchers and curious travellers are drawn to the site to explore its history, experience its atmosphere and learn from those who preserve its traditions.
At Sacred Expeditions, we believe that experiencing these places alongside indigenous knowledge keepers offers a unique opportunity to engage with African heritage through the voices of those who carry its living traditions.
